Experience
I earned my bachelor's degree in geophysics, and another in physics, from the University of California at Berkeley. Before I attended Berkeley, I attended a community college, where I began my tutoring career by working individually with students on a variety of subjects, including math and English at different levels. Later, I tutored through the school's Math Center, where students were able to come in needing help with math topics of all types, including preparing for tests, algebra, calculus, and beyond. This helped me become flexible and ready to work on different math topics on demand. I also learned to quickly assess the student's learning style, so I could adjust my methods to their particular learning strengths. I have purposely made the effort not to espouse one particular learning model, because while one way may work with a number of students, another student comes along who needs a whole different method of teaching. Sometimes I ask the student what will best help them, and sometimes I discover it just through working together. I encourage my students to explain exactly what problems they are having in a math situation, so I can understand their thinking. Plus it helps them to verbalize the problem, which is the first step towards conquering it.
